You all step through the rift, leaving normalcy behind. Before you stretches an alien world. The Ultra Crater looks like something out of a samurai movie. Bamboo forests stretch on for miles, though upon closer inspection, the stems seemed to be made from metal. The crater stretches on and on, with several paths leading from your starting location.[break][break]

For many of you, this is your first time in this strange landscape. A pressure builds in your chest, your body knowing, in some way, that it is not meant to step upon this soil. Yet you all have your orders, and so venture on you must. Aurelie Lefevre, Makoto Kurumi, and Alba Evovae all notice a sound that is not ordinarily apparent upon first entering the crater.[break][break]

the ultra crater is hostile to all life.[break][break]

it serves, instead, as a poor mimicry. shapes of bamboo tower over the entirety of the strike team, but when absinthe runs a finger over one particularly tall stalk, cold, unfeeling metal gives no quarter beneath her touch. it is all steel and hatred, and rocket thinks they can reckon with a land so foreign and so cruel.[break][break]

absinthe believes it folly. alas, she is not here to talk back. she is here to do her damn job. arceus rest whoever dares to get in her way.[break][break]

the chemist listens to her orders through a commlink with an unflinching expression. the man on the other side serves as little more than a distraction, annoying and incessant, like a fly in her ear. nonetheless, she listens, eyes straight ahead, hands forced into fists at her sides. they are to chase sparks, to reckon with the moon itself. already, absinthe is souring at the very idea, eyes upward, seeking the sound of slicing. steel edges glint against foreign sunlight filtering through tree-like facsimiles.[break][break]

then, the noises, thick and sharp, reach a fever pitch, until absinthe's eyes finally find purchase on their sources. living origami, arms sharpened like steel, lumbering towards them on points that do little more than proffer scratches to the metal earth that bore them. malice radiates off of them. their intentions are as clear as the light that bounces off of their every surface.[break][break]

it is prudent to run, but homicide comes quick and easy to absinthe, like an old friend. her gloved hand clutches tightly around a pokeball on her belt.[break][break]

what emerges is magma encased in steel, a moth plated in metal, brimming with lava. a buzz, persistent and low, drones from its sleek, constructed body, and its wings, six diamond plates in total, fan behind it like the petals of a lotus. it stares at the incoming kartana like a ghost might stare at death.[break][break]

"overheat."[break][break]

the order is given, and cesium, for all its worth, obeys, as any machine would.[break][break]

its wing plates shift to orient into a star shape in front of it, and each wing glows white with heat, so much so that the air warps and shimmers in front of it. for a moment, all is still, even the incessant droning having ceased, until a column of fire bursts forth in an explosion of light and warmth, aimed directly for the horde of kartana before it.[break][break]

hopefully it will thin the hoard enough to allow an easier escape, as absinthe already begins to turn towards the path to the waterfall.

If those of their kind were not meant to step foot in this alien world’s soil, why did the bamboo forests remind her so much of the world she had left behind? The bearing of the swords, the bamboo they once cut- it was to no surprise that Hitoshi took a liking to this place, whether through order or fondness. If there was anyone not bearing the blood qualified to wield a Hasegawa Muramasa, it was the puppy.[break][break]

And his undying support of the family was deserving of support in his led conquest, a sword for a sword. Though she was quite old and frail, her age did not stop the light stone from falling into her hands. Perhaps Lunala and Bulu would feel the same pull, bearing witness to the ultimate testament of time and waiting.[break][break]

”Thank you for the warning, Hitoshi dear,” she said, clicking an orb to release her dearest tree, ”.. katanas are the superior swords.”[break][break]

Holding her arms up and wiggling her legs as the Trevenant pulled her up into one of its palms, Marilyn huddled and bore her shotgun-cane as it began to advance in the direction of Bulu. She was quite unfamiliar with most in attendance, but she saw them just as she saw all the others- beautiful grandchildren, each walking to the sound of a different drum in a set bound by soul.[break][break]

The Trevenant hoped its attempted PHANTOM FORCE would make it a little easier to avoid the steel origami onslaught. Despite how magnificent it felt creeping across the lands with its legs moving synonymous to an Ariados, cradling its master within its wooden palm.

Their instructions were clear, but Ameena felt unsure what to expect. Ultra Crater is one of the ultra wild spaces that she's never ventured into. It held nothing of interest to her. However, it held something of value to Rocket, so she was obligated to assist in the effort to retrieve it. She had little interest in fighting legendary pokemon. [break][break]

"Do you think we will find anything of interest?" She leaned in to Makoto Kurumi as the group filed through the rift to the Ultra Crater. Makoto's research differed from Ameena's, but if there was something here that could serve them, then Ameena would assist wherever possible to secure data for her fellow scientist. [break][break]

Hitoshi's instructions spilled out. Before any further planning could happen, the buzz of kartana overwhelmed the area. Ameena didn't know many of the Rockets here, but she knew Diana Cavendish and gestured with her head to suggest Diana follow the same path Ameena sought out. Under her breath, she uttered some choice words about sword squad being their denomination. Unown covered her six with a shadow screen to block off pursuing kartana as she headed to the waterfall.

she is an instrument, no more than a sword and shield to be wielded. it only makes sense for her to join katana squad in their bid for the moon flute.[break][break]

she follows at the rear, her metagross engaged in combat, using iron defense to strengthen its plating. when the kartana get too close, it flings them back with psychic. it's not particularly effective in terms of damage, but she doesn't intend to defeat them; she's merely buying her group time to escape, so they can reach their actual target. maki notes MARILYN HASEGAWA 's escape in particular, at least before the phantom force tears the older woman from her view.[break][break]

"keep moving," she advises her group. "we'll keep them away." her own chance to move forward will come. for now she acts as a barrier for her teammates, a bulwark that will not be breached.

The purple-ish delphox waved her baton, a will-o-wisp surrounding them. Balls of fire shot forward, threatening to burn any of the ultra beasts that wanted to attack.

As ameena abadi spoke, during the first steps into Ultra Crater, Makoto glanced over to their teammate - although they appeared somewhat distracted. "Maybe. I... never delved too deep." They confessed in a murmur - their gaze once more drifting to the actual object of their attentions.

The Kartana. Though they weren't as well-versed in Ultra Crater as other more seasoned explorers might be, they could recognize something about the swarm above. "... The Kartana are agitated..." Whether it was by the group's presence, or because they had stumbled in at an inopportune time, Makoto couldn't tell. But... "Keep your eyes up..."

Even as the comms crackled to life, they didn't dare take their eyes off the Ultra Beasts above. Nor did Erebus, who hovered at their side.

Which, proved to be the correct choice. The swarm descended upon the group - but the Deoxys was quick to react, fists lighting aflame as it swung with Fire Punches to fend off those who weren't daunted by Diana Cavendish 's Delphox.

Following Ameena's lead, they'd move for the waterfall - the alien trailing not far behind.

There was beauty to be seen from the very moment they had stepped through the portal and into the Ultra Crater. It was her first time venturing into the Wilds, but she was certain a scenery such as this would continue to impress no matter how many times she returned. Only the sound was awfully repetitive... and loud.

Their comms come alive, and as their orders are given the ambiant noise seems to be kicking it up more and more. Within moments their handler too has taken note; but rather than the sound has its source pinned down. Pinned down in the same way the swarm of Kartana now descends upon them, anger-infused for whatever reason. Too many stangers shmoozing upon their territory, most-likely.

Small but plentiful, the swarm is more of a liability. Running without cover seems like a bad idea, for every bad idea there's a simple solution. With a tap Huldra appears, Calliope settling the fire salamander on her shoulder. "Roast every single one of them."

And that's all the salamander needs. Bracing its tiny paws and wrapping her tail around Calliope's neck, Huldra inhales and expels a mass of fire from her maw, aimed high for the paper swords that found the chase more appealing than to keep their life. Several dropped to the ground squirming as the fire consumed them, and more followed as her fellow Rockets stepped in, but there was no time to revel in the violence.

Instead her attention was drawn towards a familiar figure, one that looked more than interesting to team up with. She wondered if Absinthe Blackwood was the exact same way she was like behind the scenes. Only one way to find out.

There's much new to take in, and Fenelle finds der mind wandering as dee reads up on the comms and Hitoshi Inoue's instructions, focused and yet ... ...

Isn't a Katana a sword, too? Doesn't that mean there's only the Sword Squad?

Dee lingers for a moment on that thought, though der mind is quickly cut up by the invading Kartana that der Rotom in der smartwatch quickly warns about. The aspiring spectra agent nods, and makes a break towards the Northwest, going with the Katana Squad. (Perhaps also a bit curious about the flute's effect, given der deafness.) Der Hisuian Goodra's out, putting out Protects to ensure that Fenelle's safe and without injury, while the Rotom escapes its smartwatch for a moment to use Ominous Wind to throw the Kartana off their trail.

Fenelle in the meanwhile uses this as a moment to regard the current gatherings of the group dee would go with - amongst them MARILYN HASEGAWA, someone dee has wanted to converse with for quite some time, given the ... surprising events that dee has experienced in this strange mobile game. Dee has expected history to have played out, but both of them being killed by a massive "Light Stone"'s been quite a lot. Still, dee holds der horses for now as dee nods at MAKI YUKIMURA who they similiarly haven't conversed with yet.

Dee feels slightly sad about parting ways with Makoto Kurumi, but that's just a temporary feeling. ... well, there's hoping that at least Desdemona Zhong would join der squad.

To be honest, Desdemona yet feels unsure about this whole ordeal, but ... she did sign up for this, and there is no room for error - no room for mistakes, for hesitation, for uncertainty. Even so, after stepping into this strange world, she cannot help but feel unsettled in this eerie place. However, the instructions are clear and though she cannot say much about her own battleforce, she is determined to do her damnest to get everyone out alive, as far as it is in her power. As much as she can. Even in face of a threat so alien as the swarm of Kartana reaching out.[break]

She is quick to follow the Katana squad, seeing how Fenelle Miller is splitting into that direction, and wanting especially dem to be safe, among a few others that she knows, though many faces she might even see today for the first time, like the others joining the Katana squad. And then, there are the Kartanas ... hah. "Fang, dear, let's irritate them with some Will-o-Wisps," she decides to release the Banette quickly after, resorting to the Pokémon's codenames (calling her 'Shubee' in this kind of setting just feels ... wrong?). Worried about seeing MAKI YUKIMURA staying further behind, she makes a mental note to check in with her at a possible later moment - for now, however, alongside the Banette conjuring one dancing light after the other, ensures she won't lose hold of the group just yet, very well aware that if she is left to her own devices in this alien place ... well.

On one hand, Aurelie could easily imagine that this motley group of trainers was sent to the Ultra Crater because Rocket considered them expendable. The mission seemed dangerous and unpredictable, so why not throw some grunts at it? Better to risk them than one of Rocket's scientists, leaders, or avatars.

On the other hand, this mission was basically a free trip to the Ultra Crater, with all its fascinating Steel types. The Celesteelas and Kartanas here always took her breath away and captured her imagination. Between that, the potential to see the Legendary Lunala, and her hope for safety in numbers, it seemed worth a little unpredictability and danger.

Listening to the vaguely familiar voice on the comms, Aurelie grinned. Sword Squad or Katana Squad? There's a man after my own heart, she chuckled inwardly. Blade-obsessed, just like me.

The names did make sense to her, though. A sword could be anything: single- or double-edged, long or short, straight or curved, as light as a rapier or as huge and powerful as a claymore. But a katana was specific and distinctive: a slender, curving, single-edged sword with a long, wrapped handle, used by feudal warriors from Kanto or Johto, deadly and beautiful.

A specialized sword for a specialized squad, she thought. Those who sought the moon flute would have to engage Tapu Bulu in combat. But the search for artifacts could require as many different skills as there were types of swords: exploring, investigating for clues, knowing lore, and maybe even swimming, as well as fending off Pokemon.

Well, Aurelie herself had never been much of a combatant. But, seemingly unlike most of the others on this mission, she had visited the Ultra Crater before and knew a little more about it. Thinking that that familiarity might make her more useful on the Sword Squad, she fell in line behind the others already in the squad.

She started in surprise at the unusual, ominous chittering of the aggressive Kartana swarm. "That's not right," the redhead murmured worriedly. "I've never seen them act like this. I wonder if it's because of us, or if they're on edge because of something else…"

As others fought back against the onrushing Kartanas, Aurelie swung into defense. Releasing her Golurk, she urged it to use STOMPING TANTRUM to march alongside their squad while driving away any Kartanas that attacked. Meanwhile, she shaded her eye and peered forward down the path.

"I think I can see the waterfall up ahead!" the redhead called. "Not much farther now!"
